Summary

Where Wonder Grows is a beautiful story about the way rocks, crystals, sea shells, and meteorites have not only been here long before us, but also have the ability to heal us. This story follows an indigenous grandmother as she teaches her grandchildren about the healing properties of the world around us. 

Justification for Choosing

I selected this book because it is a 2023 winner of the Pura Belpre Illustrator Award. Additionally, the illustration in this book was a key factor to why I was I drawn into reading this book as the art style is extremely unique and eye-catching.  

Evaluation

For this review, I will be evaluating the book's plot, illustrations, and cover. 

Plot: 

Where Wonder Grows is a beautifully written and illustrated children's book that follows a young girl as she explores the natural world with her grandmother who shares stories and wisdom from their culture. The plot is relatable for readers of all ages, but it particularly resonates with those from Indigenous backgrounds. The plot is realistic and easy follow as the story highlights the importance of family, tradition, and connection to the physical world. This touching narrative will have a strong impact on readers who value their roots and the lessons they’ve learned from their elders. The plot has a satisfying ending that will make readers have a greater value for the world around them and appreciate their relationships with others on a deeper level. 

Illustrations: 

The illustrations in Where Wonder Grows are both beautiful and exceptionally complex, adding depth and vibrancy to the story. Each page is filled with bright-colored, detailed artwork that captures the beauty of nature and helps readers see the connection between the characters and the natural world. The illustrator's use of color and a paint-like texture brings the scenes to life, giving the illustrations a unique complexity that will have readers wanting more. The illustrations not only enhance the story, but they also invite readers to thoroughly assess each page, discovering new details and layers of meaning every time they pickup the book. The story will be memorable for readers because of the beautiful illustrations that bring the exposition to life.
